Thirlmere was named after a lake in Cumberland, England. and Picton, and between Thirlmere and Buxton. Motive power for the Picton trains was provided by 4803 (Sydney end) and 3642 (country end). Thirlmere was valued mostly for the proximity of the Thirlmere Lakes (then called Picton Lakes) which were used to provide water for the steam trains. The Garratt steam locomotive is the largest and most powerful steam locomotive in Australia and is a prime exhibit at the Trainworks railway experience at Thirlmere. Steam locomotive 3642, recently restored to service, together with sels 4916 and 4803 ran a steam train trip from Sydney Central to Thirlmere. Take a steam train ride along the Thirlmere Heritage Railway or catch the Thirlmere Flyer (bookings are essential) to the festival from Sydney and suburbs. The Museum also operates excursion trains from Sydney to Thirlmere hauled by steam and/or sel locomotives. Vintage steam and sel train rides operate on the historic Loop Line railway.
